1. Engineering Mechanics

General description

The discipline of engineering mechanics in Hohai University is established by the famous researcher and educator professor Zhilun Xu, a fellow of the Chinese Academy of Science. The discipline is one of the oldest disciplines in Hohai,and is among the support lists of National “211 Project”, “Innovation Platform Project” as well as “Provincial Key Construction Project”. The discipline now owns engineering mechanics (national key discipline), mechanics fist grade key discipline (Jiang Su Province), mechanics(first grade) doctoral program and mechanics post- doctoral program.

The discipline has a large and well-structured researching and teaching team. Now we have 23 professors, 17 associate professors and 18 lectures. Among them, we have 20 doctoral tutors and 47 master instructors.

Research directions and advantages

The discipline insists on the industry features of Hohai University and lays emphasis on the cross development of hydraulic engineering, civil engineering and environment engineering. Our research topics focus on “key mechanical problems in major projects and their safety”, “key mechanical problems in environment and disasters”, “modeling of complex media and new materials”. And the main research directions can be listed as:

1. Fracture mechanics and safety assessment for high level dams

2. Mechanical characteristics and behaviour for engineering materials

3. Computational mechanics and engineering simulation

4. Environmental fluid mechanics

5. Anti-seismic engineering and vibration control.

Now the discipline owns a National Foundation Course (mechanics) Teaching Basement, a National Engineering Researching Centre and a National Key Laboratory and has become a first class basement for cultivating high-level mechanical engineers.

Research achievements

The discipline is the first research group launching the research and engineering application for FEM in China. We focus on the mechanical problems in major hydraulic, environmental and civil engineering projects and have achieved great success. The discipline have been awarded 1 National Scientific and Technological Progress special award, 1 National Scientific and Technological Progress first grade award, 4 National Scientific and Technological Progress second grade awards, 27 provincial-level scientific and technological progress awards. In the past five years, the amount of research founding is more than 60M yuan, the number of the research papers published is more than 900 (with 200s SCI and EI and 9 monographs).

Prospects

The transaction from conventional hydraulic engineering to modern and sustainable hydraulic engineering brings great opportunities for the development of our discipline. The costal development strategies (both national and provincial) also provide the discipline a broad platform. The long-history researching and teaching experiences and advantages have been successfully applied in industry application and will make more contribution to society development.

2. Material Science and Engineering

General description

Starting from the construction material researching and teaching group, the discipline of material science and engineering in Hohai University was established in 1952. Now the discipline has a “civil engineering PhD” station, a “material science and engineering” and a “civil engineering material” master station. The discipline also owns the department of material and engineering, the institute of engineering materials, the institute of metal material and protection, the research centre of Jiang Su province cement-based material. We also have the advanced equipments and software platform for material producing, processing, anglicizing and simulating. The researching and teaching team is well organized, and we have 9 professors, 11 associated professors, 12 lectures. Among them, we have 9 doctoral tutors and 26 master instructors.

Research directions and advantages

The research mainly focuses on the hydraulic concrete especially the high performance cement-based materials. The discipline is one of the earliest researching group in hydraulic area in China, and owns great reputation. The main researching directions are:

1. High Performance Cement-based Materials

2. Structure and Performance of Materials at Micro and Nano Scales

3. Surface Protection Technology

Research achievements

In the last five years, the discipline has obtained more than 40 projects in the national programs for fundamental research and development, 863 project, provincial scientific project and other science supporting projects. The amount of founding is more than 40M yuan. Many of the achievement have world-class level. The discipline have been awarded 2 national prizes and 9 provincial awards in scientific research. More than 20 SCI papers and 30 EI papers are published every year.

Prospects

The transaction from conventional hydraulic engineering to modern and sustainable hydraulic engineering brings great opportunities for the development of our discipline. The costal development strategies (both national and provincial) also provide the discipline a broad platform. The discipline will focus on the reinforcement of ill-conditioned water dam, duration of cement-based materials, wear-proof and corrosion-proof coating and functional protection coating and aim at improving the safety level of hydraulic and oceanic engineering projects.
